The charm of watching a big-banner film at a cinema hall will perhaps never tucker out. Nevertheless, who doesn’t appreciate the convenience factor in today’s fast-paced environment? We all like to relax on the couch and watch movies from the comfort of our homes every once in a while. The western countries have enjoyed a superlative streaming experience for quite some time now, thanks to stellar companies like Netflix. In India however, Netflix didn’t meet people’s expectations as far as the Bollywood movie selection is concerned. Hence, we either have to wait for a flick to be telecasted or download torrents sneakily in order to watch at home. Moreover, the countless B-town fans overseas also find it hard to get access to Hindi movies.
The good news is that there exists an OTT service that tackles all the above-mentioned concerns. As you might have already guessed, we’re referring to “Spuul”. Basically, Spuul allows subscribers to stream and download free as well as premium content including movies and short films in Hindi, and other regional languages. The service had been established in 2012 by three well-experienced people – Sudesh Iyer, S. Mohan, and Subin Subaiah. In case you didn’t know, Sudesh Iyer is also the man behind Sony Entertainment TV network in India.
Are There Any Paid Plans?
Yes, aside from giving access to a fairly large library of free movies, Spuul also offers a premium subscription. You could either opt for a monthly subscription for just Rs. 99 or upgrade to the yearly subscription at Rs. 1500 (saves you a couple of hundreds). With the premium subscription, users can get unlimited access to Spuul’s content sans ads and even download them (in under 60 MB) for watching offline. Alternatively, you may even rent a particular movie title (pay-per-view basis). However, it only makes sense to get a monthly/yearly subscription since it works out to be way cheaper for the value offered!
What Can You Watch on Spuul?
Until last year, Spuul’s library was adorned with about 1,000 movie and TV show titles owing to a partnership with a slew of production biggies like Balaji Telefilms, Yash Raj Films, Viacom 18, Shemaroo Entertainment, Phantom Films, and UTV Motion Pictures. Since then, the company has added many more popular movies to its content catalogue.
Aside from Hindi movies, you can also stream interesting short films, selective TV shows, and full-length regional films across several languages including Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. Not only will you find relatively recent movies but also blockbusters from the ’90s. Overall, Spuul has an impressive collection of Bollywood movies across genres but it does feel a tad bit incomplete. You will notice that a lot of popular movie titles are missing on the platform. This is simply because they may not have distribution rights from that particular production company.
What About the Interface?
When Spuul had just been launched into the market, it received a lot of flak for having a poorly built app that was laggy and lacked functionality. But if you see the app today, your opinion will surely tilt on the positive side. The company has invested quite a bit to develop their app and make it almost bug-free, if not completely. Spuul now has an extremely sophisticated interface that is also very simple to use.
The homepage displays three navigational tabs – Discover, Browse, and Account. If you click on “Discover”, it’ll show you the recently added titles, and as you scroll down, you’ll see that the content is categorized into sub-categories like “New on Spuul”, “Featured”, “Dosti Special”, “Monsoon & Chill”, “Movies Leaving Soon”, “A Comedy of Errors”, etc. When you hit the “Browse” button, you’ll find several other categories, mainly genres, based on which you can filter your search. It even has a “free films” category. In our opinion, this is perhaps the strongest point about Spuul’s platform. It makes it very convenient for users to narrow down their search and make the browsing experience hassle-free.
As you enter a certain category, Spuul will show the titles in a grid-like format with a clear thumbnail and information such as the release date, rating, video quality, availability of subtitles, and runtime. If you hover your mouse over a thumbnail, it’ll also give you a little sneak peek into the plot. Once you select a title, you simply have to press the play icon to get started. Alternatively, you may also choose to rent, watch later, or download the movie. We were pleasantly surprised that the streaming player on Spuul lets you adjust the subtitles as well as the video quality, apart from controlling other things such as volume and video scrubbing. There were almost no issues in terms of buffering. Video quality is excellent as the majority of the content is available in 720p and 1080p.
Availability And Supported Devices
Spuul beats its competitors in that it’s available to everyone, irrespective of location. You can enjoy the service using Chromecast, select Smart TVs, iOS and Android devices, and laptops/computers (through the web).

The Low Points
- Needs slight improvement as far as content variety is concerned since the company is yet to strike a deal with other content partners.

If you love Bollywood movies or have been looking to stream regional content, we’d highly recommend you to check out Spuul. Even their premium membership costs a bare-minimum so you really have nothing to lose.
